What is it and what to visit in the centre of Catania - Via Etnea, the cathedral and the fountain of the elephant

Catania is just a comfortable city ... in a single street you can pass in the most suggestive areas ... This is one of the most beautiful and famous streets ...

Catania is a very comfortable city ... in a single street you can pass in the most suggestive areas ...

Via Etnea is one of the most beautiful and famous streets of Catania, built in the XVIII century, recently repaved with lava stone from Etna.

Crossing Via Etnea you will be immersed in the baroque Catanese, walking among historical squares, mystical churches, shops for shopping, street food and bistros.

One of the most representative squares is certainly Piazza Stesicoro because it is divided both physically and stylistically in two, where on one side there is the Roman Amphitheatre built in the 2nd century B.C., one of the biggest after the Colosseum and the Arena of Verona, even if today only a small portion is visible externally and, next to the amphitheatre, there is the church of Sant'Agata alla Fornace, from which every year on February 3rd the procession dedicated to the patron saint starts.

On the opposite side there is the monument in memory of Vincenzo Bellini, where at the top there is a statue dedicated to him sitting on a chair. On the four sides of the column there are four statues representing his four best known works: Norma, I puritani, La somnambula and Il pirata.

Immediately afterwards you will find yourself in Piazza Università, another splendid square that houses four magnificent palaces, the Palazzo dell'Università, on the east side, the Palazzo San Giuliano built in 1738 for the Paternò Castello Marquis of San Giuliano, designed by the architect Giovan Battista Vaccarini.

To the south of the square there are the rear side of Palazzo degli Elefanti, seat of the Town Hall, and Palazzo Cilestri dating back to the second half of the eighteenth century, the north side houses Palazzo Gioeni d'Angiò, and Palazzo La Piana.

On each side of the square there are also the four bronze candelabra representing the four legends of Catania (Gammazzita, Colapesce, Uzeta and the brothers Anapia and Anfimono).

At the end, or rather at the beginning of Via Etnea, you will find Piazza Duomo, surrounded by noble and institutional buildings, among which the Town Hall (Palazzo degli Elefanti), the Palazzo dei Chierici joined to the Cathedral of Sant'Agata (Patroness of the city) by a passage above the Porta Uzeda. At the centre of the square stands 'U Liotru (the fountain of the elephant), symbol of Catania to which the people of Catania have such a strong bond that they consider it almost magical and able to protect the city. In front of the Town Hall there is the fountain of the Amenano, the underground river that flows in the bowels of Catania, visible just below the fountain of the Amenano that is the entrance to the historical fish market.

Going up via Etnea we find ourselves in the garden of the Bellini Park (La Villa).

A green lung dedicated to the great musician. The park is experienced as a meeting place in the centre of the city of Catania, dedicated to relaxation, jogging and wellness thanks to the equipment for free body activities as well as spaces dedicated to games for children.

Remember to climb the large staircase that leads to the entrance of the park to admire the botanical clock.

After the view of the centre of Catania just a short walk away, always on foot, to reach other areas rich in history and culture with timeless charm such as Piazza Teatro Massimo, the setting of the theatre that pays homage to his most famous son Vincenzo Bellini.

Theatre with the best acoustics in the world and a guided tour inside will allow you to admire the historical hall, the gallery and the theatre museum.
